The winning champions every year must return the Stanley Cup to the trustees so that it could be awarded to the next winning team. The winner every year would have the date and team name engraved on the silver ring which was fitted to the cup.
No team ever owns the cup. It is an annual trophy which must always be there for the yearly competition. If a trustee resigned or died they would be succeeded by a new appointed trustee who would assume the care and awarding of the cup.
Lord Stanley was never a spectator at a playoff game and was never available to present the Stanley Cup to the winners. In fact he had returned to live on his English estate.
